Depending on how long you want to be gone, backpacking in South America can be a short trip or an exceptionally long one. This country is very large with so many wonderful, majestic and astonishing sites to see and explore, like the rain forests and Machu Picchu.

1. This route will take you down the north west coast of South America. We start in Peru and then go to Lima, head further south to Ica, then down to Tacna, then up to Arequipa, Cuzco, Ayacucho, then back to Peru.

2. This route takes you all the way down the west coast. We start in Chili, then we head up to Arica, then back down to La Serena, down further to Valparaiso, scurry over to Santiago, down to Temuco, over to Villarica, Pucon, Puerto Natales, Punta Arenas, Puerto Varas, back up to Puerto Montt, Castro, then further up to Chiloe, Ancund, Osorno.

3. This takes you all over Argentina. We head to Bariloche, down to Rio Galleos, then back up to Comodoro Rivadavia, El Calefate, El Chalten, Ushuaia, Mar de plata, to the beautiful Buenos Aires, Puerto Iguazu, Resistencia, Salta, and then San Salvedor de Jujuy. While you’re in the beautiful Buenos Aires, don’t forget about hiking the Inca Trail.

4. This route is a small route in Uruguay. We will travel to Colonia, then to Montevideo, Punta del Este, and then to Chuy.

5. This is another small route that is in Brazil. It has only 2 stops and goes to Porto Alegre and then to Foz de Iguazu.

Some key essentials to remember while backpacking in South America is to have backpacker travel insurance. No matter how careful you are, accidents can still happen. And, last but not least, don’t forget to add backpacking water filters to your backpacking gear list. There are some areas of the world where drinking the water is not safe. Having a water filtration system of some kind is a must have for any traveler.
