Building a kid’s climbing wall is so easy if you have the right tools. You could build one in just a day. Your kids will be the envy of all the other kids in the neighborhood. These instructions can be used to build an indoor or outdoor kid’s climbing wall. An outdoor climbing wall is the perfect solution to getting kids active outside. This is a perfect activity to cut the doldrums of a boring afternoon.
You will need:
40 Metolius climbing holds
2 – 4×8 plywood
4 – 4” long ½” bolts
4 – 6” long ½” bolts
16 – ½” washers
8 – ½” nuts
a piece of inexpensive indoor/outdoor carpet for on your kid’s climbing wall
Step 1 – Build 2 simple frames with the 2x4s and secure the frames with 2 ½ “ screws. Connect the 2 sides of the frame on top with remnants of 2x4s. On the bottom connect the 2 frames with the 4x4s.
Step 2 – Drill holes and bolt everything into place. Make sure to have all the holes lined up by measuring and marking them before drilling. Measure twice and drill once.
Step 3 – Cut the 2 pieces of plywood to fit the frame, and then cut the indoor/outdoor carpet to fit the plywood, plus enough to fold over the top and bottom of the plywood. Glue and staple the carpet into place.
Step 4 – Lay out the climbing wall holds in a fashion that allows children to climb easily but not too easily because we want them to have a bit of a challenge or else they will tire of it fast.
Step 5 – Attach both pieces of plywood to both sides of the frames using 2” screws.
Step 6 – If you feel that it needs more support, add more. In this step you also add the rope for more climbing adventures.
Step 7 – Put little kid’s climbing shoes on your little ones and watch them have fun on their new rock climbing wall and be the envy of all their friends.
