Jiu jitsu is considered to be one of the ancient martial arts styles of fighting. Once used by Samurai warriors, jiu jitsu techniques combine punches, kicks , weapons and throws in its use. Jiu jitsu techniques normally require a type of martial arts uniforms known as a gi for practicing; however, there are specific stances where no gi can be sufficient. While this is not necessarily recommended for beginners, these techniques can be incorporated into any situation that necessitates it. From arm locks to sidemount control, jiu jitsu techniques vary depending upon where one gets their jiu jitsu training.
Martial arts styles can be divided into three categories: grappling, strike-based, and mixed style. There are multiple martial arts styles in each category. Some of the more common martial arts styles are compared here.
Grappling Martial Arts Styles
Grappling martial arts styles are similar to wrestling – when the person tries to pin his opponent. Grappling martial arts involve maneuvers such as throwing, takedowns, submission holds and pinning.
A jiu jitsu gi is a training uniform for a jiu jitsu fighter. It is similar to a judogi, but it has tighter cuffs on both the jacket and the pants. This allows the wearer of the gi to benefit from a tighter fit with less material for his opponent to grab. Like judo, the jiu jitsu gi is often referred to as a kimono.
Jiu jitsu is a Brazilian martial art and self defense technique that emphasizes ground fighting and grappling. Jiu jitsu techniques were derived from Kodokan judo in the early 1900s.
